90s Baby

mulberry-bags-river-island-jackets

I grew up in the 90s so when I started seeing these items floating around lately, I knew 90s style was back. Ain’t fashion such a cyclic ride and so controlled? Who decided it would be back? Now? Did you? Not that am complaining, just wondering…

“The fact that fashion goes out of fashion and then comes back into fashion based solely on what a few people somewhere think they can sell, well to me, that’s insanity.― Randy PauschThe Last Lecture

You know my motto friends, “Mixup, Fixup” whatever your heart desires. You’ll go broke following someone else idea of what you should wear and when constantly. I have said before, I have a love-hate relationship with the idea of trends. While on one hand they may bring up a style, fabric I totally may have forgotten about, they sure as heck aren’t gonna tell  me ” I am out of season” or ” Not trending” , that’s always for me and you to decide (Don’t let my blog dictate that for you either, lol. Remember it’s my personal-public fashion diary) Pick what you choose and drop what you don’t care for. Do not buy into that ideas that corporate fashion world  should decided what’s in season for you my dear . DON’t! Fashion is individual and is personality at it’s truest form. Who are you when you are not speaking, how do you represent yourself through the art of dressing?

For now check out the most recent infusion of 90′s trends that has re-surged.

And grungy boots made it’s way into the early thousands. I never woret it, the Gothic kids did and my mom thought the style was too demonic looking. lol

90s darling!

I had a whole slide show of memories playing in my mind while creating this! TOO FUNNY! Do you remember these? If you do then your from my generation. I am sure I missed a few pieces here and there. These are the 90s trends that are coming back or I have been seeing a lot of, if you can still squeeze in your old stuff, lucky you. If not, hello thrift store!

Some of my favorite Artists from that era.

I believe the leggings started preparing us for the return of the 90s trend. It’s like all of a sudden leggings were everywhere. I didn’t even know what I wore before they busted in the scene – that’s how much I wore them! Celebrities always start the trend and it’s because they are able to influence.  When Solange Knowles  decided to bring those box-braids, Poetic Justice, Brandy, Janet Jackson braids back and alter her style, it was like OH WHAT!! Yea we want that RIGHT NOW!!  WE WANT BRAIDS, BRAIDS, BRAIDS!!!Then Rihanna started looking like an artist from another era and that’s how  90s style was re-born – my theory (lol)

Riri and Solang are responsible, in a good way,  for this trend :-)

Style tip: You can easily infuse small pieces of this 90s style in your modern day look for an edge and creativity without looking completely stuck in another time. If your not that strategic in infusing bits and pieces, some of them have been modernized for you, see Rihanna’s line with River Island here.

While minding my business on the web, I came across these looks in the last month.

I really liked them, so I decided to share them with ya!

beyonce-chime-for-change-1

I am typically not moved by her style that much, but as of lately she has become very creative! I love that lipstick color on her!

And the movie-date outfit ( see below) with her hubby is so simple yet eye-catching – now that’s the way to rock a monochrome!

OH MY GOODNESS!! Where has she been getting inspiration from these days?? She’s really creating wonderful styles!

To me her style used to be so much glitter and diva-ish, now these I like!  Should we say it has anything to do with Solange? or it’s time to give big sister her own credit for her looks? hmmm…

P.S Nice abs, let’s put second-baby rumors to rest shall we?

Where has Garcelle Beauvais been? Right now it doesn’t matter really… she came back looking darn good, not that she needed any improvements!I like the all-white ensemble with pop-of-color at the foot – it’s like pleasant surprise!!

White is definitely on it’s way to being the summer color for this year. If you want to be in on a trend,  which you don’t ever have to be, don’t buy into any pressure but should you be interested: stack up on your bleach so the white  stays popping! lol

Rihannah hardly fails in styling, once again my opinion. What do you think of this number she put together?  Creative? Right?

Nichole Richie looked so glamorous at the CFDA Fashion Awards 2013 Red Carpet. With such a shiny fabric, it is wise to keep all else simple just like she did. She looks so fresh and feminine in this  super low open-back number!

Rita Ora reminds us all black can never go wrong in putting together this simple get-up! As always when you wear all-any dark color, adding a pop color is always a nice finish if you want color. She chose red lips and bag.

Will you be rocking all one color ( monochrome)  soon?

My personal update

I know I disappeared for a second this past week, lol

Nothing major took place, I just wanted to come back with a photo-shoot. Since that couldn’t be arranged  due to scheduling I  didn’t want to just make a post just to make a post. I want it to be something of quality and genuinely something I want to write about or share with you. It’s so easy to get caught up in quantity in this blog business. I am trying to re-focus my mind and do quality posts and not feel guilty that someone will log on and see no new post(s) so I should just generate one to generate it – you know. I hope you see where am coming from if you’re one who’ve gotten frustrated to not see a post for a while. If you have suggestions, I always welcome those. Please go to Contact or  shoot me an email: Stylishsana@mixupfixup.com and let’s discuss!

However, be assured I am full of ideas. I even have some already written, waiting on  que, just waiting for the right time or some photography to publish them.  Running out of creative ideas is the least of my problems, but quality is becoming more important.

Opinion & Thoughts: The Wedding Night

wedding

wedding

I am not sure that the wedding night is a much awaited or anticipated event as before – like during my parent’s time or something. I am sure you can guess why … something to do with something that start with S that plenty of folks are doing or rather enjoying. (lol) For the few that have chosen to wait until the wedding night (me) this night is probably even more heightened in suspense for us. However, being that I plan to have a huge wedding reception, I am betting I’ll be too tired from dancing and mingling to seduce my brand-spanking new hubby!
Turns out, making love, is sometimes, the least of things that occur on a wedding night to some folks.

wedding

Being that it’s wedding season and all, I thought this article I came across would be fun to share with ya’ll.

Just Me and My TV
We had an evening garden wedding that happened to fall on the day of a 75-year record high…a whopping 106 degrees. We were exhausted and soaked when we finally got back to the honeymoon suite. I went to the bathroom to peel myself out of the drenched wedding dress, take a shower, and change. I finally walk out — perfect hair, stellar makeup, and some sexy lingerie — only to find my husband sprawled out on the bed, passed out, and snoring. Bravo TV and I spent one salacious evening together. –Sposati

wedding

Flooded With Emotion
The hotel we stayed in had a huge, two-person shower, and we jumped in it immediately after the reception. We started to fool around until my husband began to look extremely freaked out. Apparently, my fake eyelashes were falling off, and he had no clue that I had been wearing them. One strip was on my cheek, and the other was hanging off my eye. Let’s just say, it kind of killed the mood. We then got out of the shower to find the entire bathroom flooded. My dress was soaked, and everything that had been on the floor was in a pool of water, including the only pajamas and underwear that we’d brought. We spent the next 20 minutes cleaning up, and by the time we were done, all we wanted to do was sleep. –teddidan

wedding

A Rather Hairy Situation
I’d gotten so tipsy at my wedding that when we got home, my new husband had to help me open the back of my dress. In the middle of him unhooking the thing, I looked at him, smiled, reached up, and pulled out a pile of “hair” and handed it to him. I then proceeded to wander into the living room and pass out on the sofa. He had no idea the hair was my extensions and was completely freaked out. –jayjoe

Blinged-Out Lovin’
When you open a bunch of glittery congratulatory wedding cards while sitting in bed, you often end up with glitter in unusual places after other, well, shall we say, “more aerobic” activities. ;)  –MeaghanandMichael

wedding

Officially an Old Married Couple
During the reception, our guests actually shooed us into the elevator and told us to “get at it. ” We hadn’t had time to eat at the reception and were STARVING, so instead we went upstairs to our room, grabbed a bite, mussed our hair, and watched an episode of MythBusters on TV. A half hour later, we were greeted downstairs to a standing ovation. –LDYGTR13

An Awkward Entrance
At the end of the night, my husband and I climbed into our sweet ride (a ’91 Honda Accord) and drove back to the hotel. We parked by the side entrance, near one of the conference rooms, and went in. Unfortunately, we accidentally walked through the annual gathering for the Bereaved Parents of the USA, an organization for parents, grandparents, and siblings who’ve recently lost loved ones, all while wearing our wedding gear. Kind of a mood killer. --hmonkey

wedding

Don Your Wedding Duds for a “Suite” Night
We won a free wedding night hotel stay at a bridal show and were really excited about it because we had originally planned to sleep at home that night. After the reception, we drove to the hotel, but unfortunately, it was the wrong one. I was in my wedding dress and he was in his tuxedo, and we felt really silly. Luckily, the manager was great and gave us a free night’s stay in one of the nicest suites. –Stackeye210

Momma Said Lock You Out

After the reception, I felt like I was getting a cold, so we decided to go upstairs and call it a night. I immediately passed out, while my husband decided to go back downstairs and get a bite to eat. Unfortunately, he forgot his room key. I was so dead-to-the-world asleep that I never heard him banging on the door or trying to call our room. To top it all off, I completely forgot to give the hotel his name when I made the reservation. It took over an hour of coaxing for the poor guy at the front desk to finally let him into our room. –akhensley81

Fourteen Years

“Tolerance, inter-cultural dialogue and respect for diversity are more essential than ever in a world where peoples are becoming more and more closely interconnected.”- Kofi Annan, Former Secretary- general of the United Nations

Retro chick

Today I celebrate 14 years in U.S ! My family and I came here June 3, 1999,  on my sister’s birthday, so I celebrate her too! With technological advancement and increasing global interdependence, we are quickly becoming one as a human race. It’s extremely essential to try to understand and respect each other on a global level and attempt to overlook our smallest differences. In the big picture, we all want the same things: Happiness, prosperity  love and peace … the difference comes in how we go about getting these things. Thanks to my African-girl-living-in-America experiences, I have learned to embrace diversity as I am a product of a mixed culture: African roots and upbringing, American education and experiences.

If for nothing else, diversity brings about delicious food – just adding humor here ( pun intended lol). But honestly I have never been to Asia, Greece, Brazil and many other places, yet I have tasted their delicious meals thanks to the melting pot/ salad bowl of America!! YUMMY! Now if we can only transform this passion towards each other too ;-)

P.S  After writing the So-love Solange post, I was hungry for a retro-style outfit – what I wore on the weekend.  And if you know me, it’s my default sense of style. I love oldies, vintage treasures hence my closet being about 80% thrift-ed/vintage goodies!!

Outfit Transition: College to career.

I was talking to my college bestie about life post college and the struggle!! lol. We ended up talking about my blog as well. She brought up a great post-idea, how to transition some of your pieces from when you were a student to a career-style post college look. I though it would be a great post since it’s graduation season too!

I think in every stage of life your style should evolve and one should be flexible to adapt – of course all the while still maintaining personal taste.  I am sure if you look at what you used to wear in high school to college you see some difference. The same goes for entering the career sphere.  And it will also adopt again for those choosing to be a “wifey” and a mother.

Below are some of my tips, so you don’t have to necessarily purchase a whole wardrobe – perhaps a few must-have pieces.

First Look

( Most college student have a basic jeans and T-shirt)

Back to basics

Career

Accessorize basic jeans and T-shirt with basic pieces

Post college, it’s important to have at least two solid colored blazers. You can throw it on top of anything! If you want a patterned one, like this monochrome one, keep it simple and stick to darker colors, depending on where you work. Also thrift stores are a blazer hub! Go there! Add simple accessories for sophistication and it shows you pay attention to details. Finish with comfy shoes!

Basic T-Shirt for a button dressy shirt

Try this look if your NOT into accessorizing. Since the accessories adds a sophistication and your opting out, switch it for a button up dress shirt (You may have to purchase that, Target, Ross has them always)). Add  a watch, even though watches are like from dinosaur era! It just exudes your about “business’. Don’ stress yourself with a working watch even, just get any at a thrift store. It’s simply functioning as an accessory, use your cell-phone to tell time as we already do.

P.S depending on your work’s dressing code, you may opt for a darker wash jeans.

Second  Look

(Those summer days going to class, grabbing a floral, soft, easy flowing dress or maxi was the thing to-do!)

Dress up floral for work

Panty hose aren’t only for church, mama knows what she was saying! They are such a classic around-the -office -look that date way back when. Invest in an opaque black tights and a sheer ones that matches your skin tone ( I always get mine, of all places, at Walgreens- especially when am in a hurry!) They give an illusion of length, roll it under a short dress or skirt and suddenly it  looks longer!  Skinny belts, with details or not, help break and define any busy pattern, see the difference?. Get a cardigan, if you don’t have one. It’s a great throw-on in exchange of a blazer for less hotter days or a cover-up if your top is a bit revealing. A working bag of sort is a must! Check out Ross, they ALWAYS have them!

Third Look

( You know we are the wear-maxi to class generation, am sure you have/had one, see how to  turn it into an office outfit)Monochrome Maxi

Career

Maxi professional

Please do not use a vibrant, multicolored, heavily printed maxi for this style. Instead use dark to medium solid colors ( i.e black, gray, navy blue, navy green, dark purple…) , if you a choose print, a simple monochromatic black and white, like this one,  will do. Wear a sheer tank top ( Once again light or dark colors such as creme, white, or black) on top of the maxi – turning it into a maxi skirt – and throw on a dark blazer. This is a chance to rock your clubbing, platform shoes  ( remember those from college clubbing days?!) to work because it’ll be hidden under the maxi but will allow the height you need so you don’t drag the dress. It’s okay to wear a pop of lip color if you outfit is somber. Try the red lips with hair pulled up or sleeked back! Hoop earrings, so long as they can’t fit into your wrist like bangles … meaning their are too huge, should be fine to transcend over to work.

Fourth Look

(Tank tops and shorts anyone? I rarely wore this look to class but my some of my colleagues did. Can I re-create it for a career look? Hmmmm….)

Relaxed lacy day wear

Career

Tank top as vest

This is pretty self explanatory. Turn your spaghetti strap tank top into a vest and throw it on top of collar shirts for  professional layering and classic looks. Shoes, invest in flats that look mature, like pointy ones, oval,  or ones with details like a classic bow, stay away from super round shaped flats, they make your feet look short and your outfit look younger. Invest on block heels for more support and some kitty heels, this way you enjoy your inch longer and more often on your off days

Career Dress Rules

Work jewelry
  • When it comes to Jewelry less is more. You do not have to wear earrings, necklace, rings, and bracelets/bangles with one ensemble. Your doing the most!! Keep it simple. The most you should have is two , if your rocking three pieces they better not all be loud and garish.
  • Makeup , less is more as well. Please do not dive into your makeup pallet. First off it is a general stereotype that women who load up on makeup are insecure. In a work place, where competition is thriving you don’t want to seem insecure even if your not – let’s say you just love makeup. Show your confidence and comfort in your skin by going light. Sure,  smear bright lips once in a while but don’t also add fake lashes and pile blush on!
  • Clothing: watch out for materials that accentuate your figure too much or the ones that give ya cleavage and such . You do not want to be that one girl everyone talks about behind her back cause she’s dressed to use her sexuality. Now I understand if your SUPER valuptouse and struggle with that cause I do too! At times am like the hell with a cleavage, it never killed anyone! lol
  • Shoes, you have a little room for creativity and fun here ( just like graduation day, it was the only way to stand out as we are all wearing the same gown)  If the rest of your outfit is professionally on point, you make rock some of your favorites but be sure your comfortable and safe and they don’t look like a prostitute lend it to ya!

So-love Solange

2228043298

Before, I rarely recognized or thought of Solange ( Singer, Songwriter, DJ) and  Beyoncé’s baby-sis. It wasn’t until she revitalized and re-worked her whole look – not that her former look was bad or anything, it was just plain and regular I guess, then I started seeing her more. I am not sure when exactly she became a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world, but I like this new Solange! She started sticking out like a sore thumb everywhere ; living us at awe with her aesthetic creations! Her style is a mixture of retro inspiration, bold prints, quirky, edgy jewelry/accessories and shoes and vibrant colors!

It seems the African print and print in general fever has bite the woman!! Plus she’s  been hanging out with many African stylist like oroma elewa and frequenting Europe – which is a much more diverse scene .

“I definitely gravitate toward prints and color. I love to play with prints on prints, but I try to have a good instinct about what to match. Like, if I have a Pendleton print, mixing that with a tribal African print will give off National Geographic-gone-bad vibes. So if I wear an ethnic print, I contrast it with a bright top, or maybe stripes,” Knowles told the NYT.com. “Yellow is my absolute favorite color to wear. I also love hot pink. When I match my prints with those colors, I feel it’s a “me” outfit.”

You know I love me some prints and bright colors!! It’s no wonder she’s one of my favorite dressed celebs, whether she’s on a carpet event or going about her day, you almost always catch her nailing it! I love the Afrocentrism feel with her hair styles also. Personally, it suits her more than weaves! To me, she’s the queen of mixing prints! I love prints but I had never been brave enough to mix them up, scared of looking like a hot-mess. Solange’s dare-to approach to mixing has been inspirational !

On the top of her fashion inspiration is  Diana Ross and her mother. “Seeing photos of my mother from the ’60s and ’70s, she was a total rebel with her style”
