Style is personal

I am sure you’ve  heard of the saying “ Style is personal “. This post helps illustrate that point. One of my sisters and I are styling one of my favorite trends this S/S 14 season – the tropical print.  The styling war begins! Sike! It’s all fun and all about different perspectives … I did mention style is personal already? Right?

One skirt, two ways
Obviously, this is one skirt and two ways to dress it professionally. My sister kept it clean with a white peplum top. The white color brings out the white backdrop of the skirt making the overall look soft. She finished it with a statement of color adding the yellow belt, allowing for the waist to further be defined.
Style tip: Peplums are already hemmed and shaped to bring in the waist. You can further define the waist by adding a belt, it just frames it even more and gives a more narrow, hourglass silhouette.
I, of course, went for print-mixing. I guess everyone has their staple go-to look **shrugs shoulders** I was jokingly telling my sister, I know yours won’t be an outfit without some sort of blazer! She’s definitely your blazer-type-of-girl! On the other hand, she expected some eccentric factor in my styling. She and I both agreed something was missing with mine, hence the necklace. I settled for a basic black accessory to offset all the busyness created by the mixing of prints. I ,also, kept the shoes simple and dark for a polished office look.
One shirt, two ways

Keeping with the theme of the trending tropical print, my sissy and I styled a casual look. We both opted to style this loose crop top with a skirt. It can easily go with jeans as well. This is such a my sister’s look (left). I can definitely say – without any hesitation – she would wear it in a heart beat! She’s very much less is more when it comes to accessorizing. She’s about her small studs and a simple necklace. Lately, I’ve seen her gravitating towards fringes, so the bag is no surprise. It compliments the green and the leaves of the shirt so well. It is as though it is a palm tree with the brown and green complimenting each other beautifully.

You see what I’m seeing?? Palm tree: perfect for a tropical print, ain’t it?

On the other hand you have me, obsessed with gaudy, large, unique, “I am here” accessories! The shirt was colorful and I wanted to keep the look that way. The yellow blends so well with the tropical top it kinds looks like drinking mango in a cool day in a tropical resort, no? See, how I draw inspiration from nature when blending colors? It is the easiest way to imagine if two or more colors wouldn’t clash or not.

I hope you enjoyed this styling “face off”. I am very big in encouraging folks to own their own sense of style. Dressing ourselves is about an outer radiation of our personality, mood, feelings, growth or status. It is no fun to trying to be someone else in this personal matters. Really. STOP IT. Style is personal, without even taking into account that we are all different shapes, skin tones, proportions etc… it is very much about what you are speaking, radiating without uttering a word. Who are you saying you are when you present yourself? Own it!

 Be blessed!
